It is possible that Frederic Vasseur will soon leave the position of head of the Alfa Romeo F1 team and CEO of Sauber Motorsport, as he has been asked to lead the Ferrari team.
When asked Peter Sauber if he was surprised by this development, the 79-year-old founder of the team from Hinwil, Switzerland, replied: “Yes and no. If you get an offer from Ferrari, you have to accept it.
On the other hand, those who know the history of Ferrari know very well that the leaders of the Scuderia usually do not stay in office for long, as it has been since the days of Enzo Ferrari. The only exception was Jean Todt, who led the team for over 12 years.”
Sauber also has a clear answer to the question of who could lead Alfa Romeo/Sauber instead of Vasseur: he did not hesitate to appoint Beat Zehnder, the team’s sporting director.
“I’m glad I’m not the one solving this problem,” Sauber said in an interview with Blick, adding. “Beat is a phenomenal figure in Formula 1.”
Zender has been with Sauber since the team’s first year in Formula 1 – they say he holds a record of sorts: he has been at every Grand Prix without exception since 1993, and of course no one knows this team better than he does. While it is likely that Audi is already starting to influence Sauber Motorsport’s personnel policy, Beat Zehnder can at least lead the team during the transition period.
