On Tuesday, three teams announced leadership changes at once – Frederic Wasser replaced Mattia Binotto at Ferrari, Andreas Seidl moved from McLaren to the Sauber Group to the position of chief executive and Andrea Stella became Woking’s team leader in place of Seidl.
McLaren chief executive Zach Brown said Andreas Seidl had given him advance notice of plans to join Sauber/Audi, but only in 2025 after his McLaren contract expired. However, when word got out about Frederick Vasseur’s transfer from Sauber to Ferrari, Seidl Brown asked for early termination of the contract, and Zach went to meet him.
The decision to appoint Andrea Stella Brown as the new head of McLaren was explained by the fact that the Italian specialist knows the team well and does not need time to get used to the team.
Zach Brown: “It’s hard for me to comment on the situation in other teams because I don’t know much about them. We have invited a team member in the role of head of the team, which indicates the high level of our specialists. The team took Andrea’s appointment predictably well.
We are trying to build a team that will fight for titles and we have made a decision that will not allow us to waste time. Giving someone the position of leader from the outside would inevitably slow us down as the person would need time to get comfortable. If we hadn’t had Andrea, we might have considered this option, but in this case it was immediately clear: we want Stella to lead the team.
The past 24 hours have been exciting – 40% of teams have changed leaders. Formula 1 is a dynamic business focused on results. I can comment on the situation at McLaren because I don’t have all the information about the others, but I think Mattia Binotto has done a good job this year. As for Jost Capito, he clearly had difficulties at Williams.
I expect Andrea to take full responsibility for the results of the Formula 1 team. I don’t think our team is ready for major changes. Of course I will help Andrea in those areas where he needs my support. The head of the team is responsible for the sporting and commercial aspects, communication with the press, etc. I think he and I will find a way to work together.”
