Mark Hughes on leadership changes

British pundit Mark Hughes commented on the reshuffle in the leadership of the Formula 1 teams announced on Tuesday. Speaking of Frédéric Vasseur’s appointment to lead Ferrari, Hughes suggested the French specialist would face the same problems as his predecessor, Mattia Binotto.

“Sauber made a great decision in luring Andreas Seidl from McLaren,” wrote Mark Hughes. He is calm, determined and gets along well with people. He suits Audi given his experience with Porsche and BMW.

McLaren, in turn, acted logically and elevated Andrea Stella to team leader. He is a determined and very smart engineer who got a chance to prove himself in a more responsible position.

As for Frederic Vasseur, I fear he will face the same problems as his predecessor, Mattia Binotto. In fact, the problems may be even more serious, as his position as Team Leader and CEO offers less autonomy than Binotto’s position as Team Leader and Managing Director.

I hope I’m wrong, because Frederik is a good guy and it’s important for Formula 1 that Ferrari fight for high positions. It’s not necessarily going to be in trouble any time soon, as the reshuffle shouldn’t affect the tech program, which appears to be quite effective.

The question is whether he can get to the root cause of the problems that lie in the team culture, which is determined by top-down decisions. This is worrying.”
