Brundle: Driving a Ferrari is the toughest job in the world

Formula 1 continues to discuss the appointment of Frederic Vasseur as head of the Ferrari team. British Sky Sports pundit Martin Brundle believes the French specialist has yet to prove he can handle the tasks assigned to him.

Martin Brandl: “In my opinion, leading a Ferrari team is one of the hardest jobs in the world. The team fired Mattia Binotto, who had worked at Ferrari all his life, and invited Frederic Vasseur. Difficult tasks await him.

Vasseur has been successful in motorsport, but especially in youth series. He did great at Alfa Romeo, but does that mean he can do well at Ferrari? Not a fact. Let’s see if he has the qualities to steer Ferrari in the right direction.

If the team decided to invite Vasseur just because he has a close relationship with Charles Leclerc, then this is a fundamentally wrong reason. Much more serious work awaits him than just finding a common language with Leclerc.

Ferrari has two drivers – Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc – one of the best drivers in Formula 1. They both need comfort, they both need love and support. Frederic shouldn’t come to the team thinking, “I’m with Charles now.” Of course, if Leclerc feels comfortable in the team it will increase Ferrari’s chances of keeping him at home, but still the results are of paramount importance.

It’s not about who is friends with whom in this industry, rather the opposite. For Leclerc, all that matters is which team can provide him with a potential championship car. That Charles won the youth series in Vasseur’s team, and now his younger brother plays for Frederic’s team, is just a fact, nothing more.
