Pato O’Ward took part in the first free practice session of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at the wheel of McLaren and worked on testing in Abu Dhabi, and will continue his career in IndyCar next season. The Mexican driver wants to get behind the wheel of Formula 1 in 2023, but does not know if he will get that chance.
Pato O’Ward: “It’s hard to say if I can get behind the wheel of McLaren again next year because from April to September I have a very busy schedule. During these months it is very difficult to find an opportunity to drive. I think my prospects depend on whether the team can find a week or weekend off. These decisions are usually made at the last minute.
Formula 1 is a crazy world, and sometimes doors open for you that you thought shouldn’t open, and vice versa. I only realized that there is no point in planning even a year ahead – you can only plan the next step.
I hope to win more races, win the Indy 500 and fight for the IndyCar title. Maybe then there will be opportunities for me in Formula 1. If this happens, I will accept it immediately.
