In Barcelona the circuit is fast and demanding for cars, but overtaking is almost impossible there. The use of DRS and even the transition to a new generation of machines could not change that.
According to Racefans, the organizers of the stage have asked the FIA to issue a Grade 1 licence, allowing Formula 1 racing, for a different version of the track configuration – without the chicane used in the final in 2007 bend has been added.
Subsequently, the chicane was added for safety reasons, separating the two fast right turns, but many riders said abandoning it would significantly increase overtaking opportunities – and the stage’s promoters decided to try it.
To ensure safe passage of the last sector without a chicane, a slight raising of the protection systems at Turns 13 and 16 is required. Expansion of the gravel pit has already started and will be completed by the end of March. Some trees will have to be felled, but new ones will be planted so that the environment does not suffer.
