While the engines are being finalized at Mercedes, Ferrari, Renault and Honda for 2022, engine regulations would largely be frozen until 2026, when Formula 1 switches to a different engine specification.
At the same time, the FIA stressed that if any of the manufacturers’ engines are seriously lacking in power, they will allow it to make the necessary refinements. After the first two Grand Prix, FIA technical director Nicholas Tombasis said there was not that need – all manufacturers’ engines are roughly equal in power.
Nicholas Tombasis: “At the moment none of the four manufacturers have any problems, the engines have the same power.
When we discussed the freeze of the regulations, we decided that if anyone has problems, we will all decide together how we are going to solve it, maybe by finishing the bike. It makes no sense to sentence someone to four years in prison.
Freezing the regulations for that long is not the best solution, but we had to do it because it would be too expensive for manufacturers to adapt these engines and develop new ones before 2026.”
