In 2022, Max Verstappen won the championship ahead of schedule, 146 points ahead of the nearest competitor, but doesn’t believe he’s dominated Formula 1 this year…
Max Verstappen: “It turned out like this this year. Some teams had reliability issues that helped us. Yes, according to the statistics it may seem that we dominated this year, but in terms of number of pole positions I was not first and our car was not the fastest in qualifying in most Grands Prix.
That’s why I wouldn’t call it true dominance. If you really dominate then you start from pole and immediately break away from your rivals, which was not the case in most cases this year.
At the beginning of the year, our car was not the fastest, but we still managed to get some important victories, which played a key role at the time – I understood that if the rivals did not have problems with reliability, the battle would be very stubborn.
Retiring is always frustrating, especially when you’re fighting for a title and you suddenly lose a lot of points at once. And two retirements in the first three races at the start of the season were very unpleasant. And the fact that we later managed to bounce back is a testament to the strength of our team.”
