In 2010 – 2013 Red Bull Racing dominated Formula 1, and after moving to hybrid powerplants it rolled back and only proved to be the best again in 2022. Adrian Newey, head of the technical department at Red Bull, sees the transition to Honda engines in 2019 as a key success factor.
Adrian Newey: “The years of Mercedes dominance have reminded us once again how important it is to have a good engine.
At the start of the hybrid turbo era, Renault made a mistake and we knew that even if we did a fantastic job, in the near future we could only win races by accident and never the championship.
Everything changed the transition to Honda engines. A reboot has occurred. One of the strengths of the team was that we were able to weather a difficult period adequately, and when a good power plant from Honda appeared, we answered our rivals with confidence.”
