McLaren Racing CEO Zack Brown believes that the most difficult part of the story of the breakup with Daniel Ricciardo was due to the fact that only a narrow circle of people knew the real picture of what happened.
Zach Brown: “It was a really tough year, with a lot of personal experiences for me. First of all, this is thanks to Daniel Riccardo. It was great to work with him, it was he who gave us the first win in many years.
It was a lot of fun with him, but there were also a lot of things that upset us because we didn’t get the results we wanted. The most difficult thing was due to the fact that the situation in the team was assessed by people who do not know it well. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and it’s normal for sports – you can’t exercise if you don’t have thick skin.
The fans in the stands, the press have their own opinion, and all this should be taken calmly. But I know what really happened, I know what kind of relationship I had with Daniel, with his management. Our cooperation was sincere and it was not easy for everyone to complete it.
In fact, it was not as people imagined. It was frustrating that we were wrongly accused of something that didn’t happen. But I know the truth, Daniel knows it and all the people who are in a close circle. Formula 1 is a very popular sport and it’s great that fans have their say, but unfortunately nowadays we often see people crossing a certain line, and what they say can no longer be called normal commentary.
But this is the world we live in, so people who actually know what really happened should take a beating.
The whole team was very upset by parting with Daniel, everyone loves him, because thanks to him the atmosphere in the pits and at the McLaren base was just great, but sometimes everything turns out that cooperation does not work. And this is quite a mystery because Riccardo is a talented racer, no doubt about that, and he showed it at Monza.
He won 8 Grands Prix and it was hard for anyone to say goodbye to him, but the memories of the 2021 Italian Grand Prix are still my favorites from my three-decade motorsport career. For this I am grateful to Daniel, and I really hope that we will see him back in Formula 1, because he is eager to return.
The door remains open for him and if the stars in the sky come together successfully in the future, he could still be behind the wheel of a McLaren car (it is appropriate to recall that in addition to Formula 1, McLaren teams compete in IndyCar, as well as in the Extreme E electric series and Formula e). I would love to work with him again in motorsport.
At the same time, we believe that Oscar Piastri, although he is a beginner, can become a fantastic racer, because he has already won more than one championship on the first attempt, and this is always evidence of a special talent.
He’s got a very right mindset and now that Lando Norris has become a mature professional, we feel we’ve inherited a wonderful combination of experience and youth. Although our experienced rider is also quite young. Overall, we believe that the Norris-Piastri duo has tremendous potential, which they will demonstrate in the near future.
