Former Fernando Alonso race engineer Mark Slade believes the Spaniard could have won the title in 2007 if McLaren management had supported the driver by creating the right atmosphere in the team.
Mark Slade: “Working with Fernando was great. He is a Formula 1 terminator who never gives up and is very fast. Fernando was desperate to win every race and it was fantastic.
In 2007, the problems were more related to the team – the atmosphere was very bad and there were several events that only exacerbated the difficulties. I think management could have done better to resolve the situation and prioritize the team. Some things didn’t work the way they should. We ourselves have lost the title.
I think if Fernando had the right support he would most likely have won the title in 2007 and 2008. Who knows how events would have developed, but what happened, happened.
I’ve never had any problems with Fernando. I really enjoyed working with him.”
