Chandhok: I’m not sure that Binotto’s departure will solve the problems

Former Formula 1 driver and now British Sky Sports pundit and commentator Karun Chandhok believes last season’s key moment for Ferrari was the retirement of Charles Leclerc due to an engine failure on stage in Baku.

Karun Chandhok: “I think the race in Baku was the turning point of last season for Ferrari. Charles Leclerc arrived in Azerbaijan ten points behind Max Verstappen. If he had won that race and put in the best lap, he would have been tied with Max in the individual standings.

In reality, it turned out that Leclerc retired and was also penalized with the loss of positions at the next race in Canada. Just eight days later, Leclerc left Montreal trailing by 46 points.”

Commenting on the resignation of Mattia Binotto from the position of head of Ferrari, Chandhok expressed doubts about the correctness of such a decision: “If you look at the technical side of the matter, Ferrari has managed to produce a very fast car. to build. In terms of speed over one lap, their car was the fastest last season.

In terms of decision-making and reliability, Ferrari had problems, but I’m not sure a leadership change is the right solution to the problem. The situation turns into a vicious circle. If someone at Ferrari makes a mistake, then the attention of the whole world press is on him, and if an engineer who lives and works in Italy makes a mistake, he feels pressure everywhere.
