At the beginning of April 2021, Mike Elliott took over from James Ellison as Mercedes Technical Director, and his first full season in this role in 2022 has been a challenging one for the team. Toto Wolff believes that failure will make the British engineer stronger.
Toto Wolff, team principal: “Mike called last season his ‘baptism of fire’. A more difficult season could not be imagined, but in the long run it will play an important role for Mike, making him stronger and more experienced.
It should be understood that James will continue to work with us and oversee the technical coordination between Brackley and Brixworth. He is always there as an advisor, mentor and observer to Mike and our other technical leaders. In addition, we have a very stable group of senior engineers who have been in their position for a long time and that has not changed.
Gradually they climb the career ladder. Mike was the first to take on the role of CTO, but the working group is the same as before.”
