The Red Bull Racing team breached financial regulations and was fined $7 million, as well as receiving a sports penalty in the form of a 10% restriction on the ability to conduct aerodynamic research in the next 12 months.
Commenting on the penalties for Red Bull Racing, Haas team boss Günther Steiner said he did not consider such a penalty to be a serious one.
Günther Steiner: “As for the financial penalty, it does not give us any advantage, because it is not us, but the FIA will get seven million. If we talk about a technical penalty, I don’t consider it a serious penalty. Yes, Red Bull will have less time in the wind tunnel, but they have the money, so they can develop something else.
Of course, working in a wind tunnel is the best way to make a car faster through aerodynamics, but there are other areas where you can regain speed. The overspent money has not been deducted from the budget for the following year.
As I said, I don’t consider the 10% cap on wind tunnel work to be a serious penalty. They have money left over and can refine other parts of the machine.”
