Global Athlete, an international movement for change in the sport, has condemned the FIA’s recent decision to ban drivers from making political statements. Global Athlete believes that the governing body cannot limit the human rights of athletes.
Rob Koehler, CEO of Global Athlete: “No sport without athletes. To force athletes to compete but stay away from politics while the FIA is constantly using politics to its advantage is hypocrisy.
Freedom of expression is one of the fundamental human rights, no sports rule can replace human rights.
Many people see athletes as agents of change, but the FIA’s actions encourage children, young people and adults to remain silent on social justice issues.
It is not good. Too bad for the FIA. Riders are people first and athletes second.
Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states: “Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes the freedom to hold an opinion without interference.”
Sports rules should not limit this right.”
