Safnauer: A lot of decisions are made in qualifying in Monaco

In Barcelona, both Alpine F1 drivers finished in the top ten, team leader Otmar Szafnauer hopes to earn points with two cars in Monaco…

Q: How do you rate the results of the Spanish Grand Prix?
Otmar Safnauer: The race turned out to be interesting – with a lot of overtaking and pit stops. Given the poor performance on Saturday, we are happy with the results – from 20th and 12th place we finished 9th and 7th. Both riders, with the help of engineers and strategists, executed our plan.

The race was long and hot, but this week the team managed to recover and prepare for a unique weekend in Monaco.

Q: What has Spanish drama taught you?
Otmar Safnauer: The circuit in Barcelona is one of the most diverse. There are long straights, slow corners and chicanes, a few medium and fast corners. All this allows you to objectively assess the capabilities of the machine.

The weekend left a few questions. The weather from Friday to Sunday was stable, but our car became less competitive these days. We have to find a reason to consistently spend weekends earning points with two cars.

Q: How is the team preparing for the Monaco Grand Prix?
Otmar Safnauer: We are all looking forward to this stage on the legendary track, where we all love to perform. On Sunday it won’t be easy to overtake on a narrow track, it’s important to make sure we are fast in qualifying – this was the case during the season, except in Barcelona where we are on Saturday lost speed compared to Friday. This needs to be worked on. Qualifying positions will seriously affect the results of the race.
