Esteban Ocon has been pretty consistent this season, finishing in the top 10 in five of the six races he has held and adding a further six points to Alpine F1 last weekend in Barcelona. Of course, the French driver also wants to fight for a good result in Monaco.
Q: How would you react to the results of the Spanish stage?
Esteban Okon: The race went very well from the start. We can’t say this was the easiest weekend for us, but it wasn’t until Sunday: on race day, when it’s really important, the team did a great job.
The car worked well, was capable of a good pace, so Fernando and I performed well and finished in the top ten. There is a lot of valuable information to be gathered at the Barcelona circuit and we hope to apply it to Monaco.
We are determined to continue a series of productive races, especially as we believe we have not yet fully revealed the car’s potential. But such results always contribute to a positive attitude and indicate that the efforts of the team are paying off.
Question Before the race in Monaco. What results can the team expect on this track, which is so different from others?
Esteban Okon: We shall see. Monaco is special in many ways: the average speeds are the lowest of the season and the corners are so tight that the results do not depend so much on the engine power.
Good braking stability and dynamic acceleration out of corners are important there – the engine has to respond well to the accelerator pedal.
Everyone knows that in Monaco the starting position is extremely important, so in qualifying you have to try to perform better than in Barcelona. Last year in Monaco I started from 9th position, but of course I want to get better results and work steadily, all days of the weekend.
Q: Can Monaco still be considered the “jewel in the crown of Formula 1”?
Esteban Okon: I think so. This Grand Prix has such a rich history and the Monaco circuit is a cult spot. This is one of those races that everyone dreams of winning from an early age, and every time you return there, you experience a special feeling.
A great atmosphere accompanies the weekend in Monaco and we hope that the French fans will give us good support! I know that our whole team wants to start at the city circuit in Monaco as soon as possible and, as always, will try to show everything we are capable of.
