Formula E opens up new opportunities for McLaren

In the ninth season of Formula E, the McLaren team will make its debut in the electric car racing world championship, which will use Nissan power plants. But even last year this team was called differently and was one of the most successful – suffice it to say that the riders became champions for two seasons in a row.

The fact is that McLaren Racing acquired the assets of the factory Mercedes-EQ Formula E team when the management of the concern in Stuttgart decided to curtail the Formula E program in order to allocate all resources to other racing series.

The new team, which has changed a lot – both cars and drivers, but has remained the same leader, Ian James, had a good run in the recent pre-season testing at Valencia: Rene Rust and Jake Hughes were each in the top ten day.

Zach Brown, CEO of McLaren Racing, hopes the upcoming debut season will be successful: “There are excellent opportunities ahead of us. Mercedes chose to leave this sport, but now we are entering a new era related to the transition to the third generation of cars, Gen3.

We feel like something like a reboot is happening right now. Of course we still have a lot to learn, but acquiring a team that has won the previous two championships offers a great opportunity to keep the team Ian James can fight against and come to the championship with a team that already knows how to win. .

We are very pleased that former Mercedes employees are now McLaren employees. Given the history of our relationship with Mercedes, it was a good way for them to get into the McLaren family. And I’m very happy to work with all these specialists – together we create our racing team.

We decided to come to Formula E because we quickly realized that the series is developing successfully and that our fans and our partners like it. That’s why we decided to double the effort, because care for the environment is also very important to us.

I look at different types of racing and I understand that Formula 1 has a lot to learn from IndyCar, and IndyCar from Formula E and vice versa. It seems to me that the work in different race series gives us the opportunity to try a lot in this regard.

We had a good example in Formula 1 when we repainted the cars in the legendary Gulf livery. It doesn’t happen often in F1, but it happens all the time in NASCAR. We thought it would make a strong impression, and the fans appreciated it. Our large racing family and extensive motorsports program allow us to do a lot.

René Rast, who won titles in the DTM, is in our team. He is a recognized and experienced master, he is considered a very fast racer. René has already driven in Formula E and we were happy to sign him. Jake Hughes has been with Mercedes for a long time, has been a reserve driver and worked on a simulator. He is well known to Ian and the team engineers and he also deserves a chance to prove himself.
