This weekend Fernando Alonso will start for the 18th time in the Monaco Grand Prix and expects to earn points again, as he did on his home stage in Spain. However, now he lives in Monaco, so he is also considering the upcoming race home†
Q: In Spain you earned points again: tell us about the amazing breakthrough from 20th position at the start to 9th place at the finish…
Fernando Alonso: Racing in Spain was fun. There was no audience in the stands last year due to the pandemic, so it’s great that we’ve now seen and heard fantastic support from the fans.
On Saturday we didn’t do well, but on Sunday we seemed to have found the right momentum and were able to score points even though we started from last position. The race was a joy, we were able to make some nice overtakes, which was facilitated by the efficient operation of the DRS system, as it is usually difficult to overtake on the Barcelona circuit.
I hope we can continue the string of productive performances.
Q: What about racing on the famous street circuit in Monte Carlo?
Fernando Alonso: I have always enjoyed playing there. The Monaco Grand Prix is one of the brightest shows on the Formula 1 calendar. I think on the new generation of cars it will be even harder to handle all those slow corners.
A small mistake on a city track is enough to cause a collision with a barrier. Due to the heavy traffic there will be problems during qualifying, but I am ready to overcome all these challenges!
Q: What are your best memories of this song?
Fernando Alonso: I think of the memories of my victories in 2006 and 2007. These were the best moments of racing in Monaco. In those years, the intense battle for the title continued until the end of the championship, and victories in Monaco gave extra strength. But most of my races on this track gave me pleasure, and it’s great that I now also live in Monaco.
