Before the race weekend in Melbourne, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff acknowledged that the speed of the W13 car was far from expected and that it would take time for the engineers to find a solution to the problems that had arisen.
Toto Wolff “The team continues to learn and the first two races have shown that we still have a lot to learn. At the moment the track speed is not up to our expectations, but everyone in Brackley and Brixworth is focused on understanding the problems and finding the right solutions.
We don’t have a magic solution for next race weekend, but we will continue to work to improve in the coming races and hopefully close the gap with the leaders. Until then, we have to take every opportunity and squeeze everything out of the car we have at our disposal.
There are several challenges ahead of us, but we like it because they allow the team to show their true spirit. Lewis and George make a significant contribution to the cause by providing feedback, spending time on the simulator and working together for the benefit of the team.
For the first time since 2020, we will return to Melbourne and race in Australia for the first time in three years, which is too long for a city and country that loves Formula 1 so much. We are looking forward to the fans and the new track configuration, which should offer more overtaking opportunities and a higher lap speed.
