FIA: Circuit Melbourne gets new configuration

Much has been written and said about the reconstruction of the Albert Park track. There are so many changes that the FIA officially considers its configuration new, as detailed in the preview of the upcoming Australian round, and there is a detailed description of that too.

1st turn

The 1st bend has become 2.5 meters wider. Drivers can now choose different routes, which means there are more opportunities to overtake. It should also contribute to a sharper fight in the 2nd and 3rd turns.

Calculations show that with this configuration of the 1st turn, the speed in it will increase by 17 km/h, ie the average speed of its passage in qualifying will be at least 183 km/h.

3rd turn

These changes affected the next turns of the ring. In turn 3, the riders will be able to take full advantage of the fact that the track has become 4 meters wider and new sections have appeared. The ability to overtake is increased and the minimum speed in corners is increased from 102 km/h to 110 km/h.

6th turn

The speed in this corner after the reconstruction has increased more than in any other part of the track. Previously it was at the level of 149 km / h, now it will reach 219 km / h as the track has become 7.5 m wider.

At high speeds, turbulence behind the cars is reduced, allowing drivers to pursue their rivals more closely as they enter the new 1.3km high-speed section of the circuit.

Former 9th and 10th turns

The Turn 9 and Turn 10 chicane have been removed, probably the most significant change to the Albert Park circuit. Now in place is the longest high-speed section of the ring, which can be conditionally considered straight – its length is 1.3 km.

It runs along the lake and the speeds there should be up to 330 km/h. Changes in this sector made it possible to create an additional DRS zone – there are now four on the track.

11th turn

The high-speed section continues until the 11th corner (formerly 13th), before which the width of the track has been increased from 12 to 15 meters. This allows riders to take different paths as they enter this bend, which is also profiled to narrow the apex.

13th turn

Turn 13 (formerly Turn 15) is 3.5 m wider, again to create more overtaking opportunities.

pit lane

The pit lane became 2 meters wider, allowing the speed limit to be increased from 60 to 80 km/h.

Additional changes

In turns 3, 11 and 13, the profile of the curbs has been changed so that riders try not to use them too actively. But at the same time, the chance of overtaking along the outer radius should increase.
