On the eve of the 83rd year of life, the legend of world football Pele died after a long illness. The Brazilian is recognized by FIFA as the best player of the 20th century and the only player in history to win the World Cup three times.
Pele repeatedly visited the Brazilian Grand Prix, talking to many racers and even giving the green light with a checkered flag. The racing world mourns the king of football by posting touching words on social media.
“Very sad news about the death of Pele, one of the greatest footballers ever,” Formula 1 boss Stefano Domenicali wrote. “He was a shining light to Brazil and millions around the world. His skill, smile and greatness will live on forever. Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.”
Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, who became an honorary citizen of Brazil this year, wrote: “Today we lost a legend. Thank you for sharing your talent, genius and love with us. Pele’s legacy will always inspire us.”
Lewis also posted a photo of a T-shirt signed by Pele: “It meant a lot to me to personally receive such a gift from the hands of a legend. I will keep this T-shirt forever.”
Brazilian driver Felipe Massa posted the following message: “For those who, like me, love football and the Brazilian national team, Pelé is an icon, the greatest player of all time, an inspiration not only for football players, but for all athletes . . Pele’s legacy is eternal, just like himself. My condolences to all of King Pele’s family.”
Another Brazilian driver, Formula E champion Luca di Grassi wrote: “Rest in peace, king.”
“The legend is gone, but we will always remember it,” former FIA president Jean Todt wrote.
