It was hot in Monaco on Friday. At the beginning of the first training session, the air warmed up to thirty degrees, and the asphalt under a cloudless sky – to fifty degrees. The teams worked out the traditional program of looking for settings and assessing tire wear, but race day conditions are expected to be completely different – cloudy and around twenty degrees.
From the very start of the session, Mercedes drivers complained about the car’s strong build, although the team appeared to have solved this problem in Barcelona last week.
There were no incidents. Leclerc, Verstappen, Magnussen and Pérez all ended up in the safety bag from turn one and ruined a set of tyres. Hamilton, Latifi and Leclerc cut the chicane twice – with no impact on the cars.
On the 19th minute, Schumacher’s car froze due to problems with MGU-K at the pitlane entrance – and the session was interrupted for five minutes with red flags to evacuate him. Mick never left.
Bottas had problems with the gearbox – the Finn drove two laps and handed the car over to the mechanics, causing him to lose the first session.
Charles Leclerc took the lead with a lap time of 1:14.531.
