At the beginning of December last year, Formula 1 officially announced the cancellation of the 2023 Chinese Grand Prix due to “ongoing problems with Covid-19”. However, as Racingnews365 found out, the Shanghai race can still take place in 2023.
In recent weeks, Chinese authorities have lifted many restrictions related to the pandemic and all quarantine requirements for international flights should be lifted from January 8. In this regard, Chinese Grand Prix promoter Juss Sports has already approached Formula 1 with a proposal to return the stage to the 2023 calendar and hold the race on the originally scheduled date of April 16.
If the 2023 Chinese Grand Prix does not take place, it will be the fourth year in a row without a race in Shanghai. According to the publication, the contract for the stage could be terminated if the race cannot be run for more than three years in a row.
In addition, given the long break in Formula 1 rounds, it is very likely that local marshals will have to retrain and the Shanghai circuit will have to undergo an FIA inspection to confirm its Grade 1 licence.
Formula 1 did not respond to a request for comment on the possible return of the Chinese Grand Prix.
