Hamilton: Sometimes it felt like my eyes would pop out of their sockets

In the final stage in Barcelona, Mercedes was happy to get rid of the build-up of cars, but in Monaco it became even more difficult for the riders due to the stiff suspension…

George Russell (6th): “The day went well, but so far we are not in the form we expected. The track in Monaco is not suitable for new cars. For the aerodynamics to work we have to lower the suspension as much as possible and tune it really hard, and with settings like that it’s hard to attack at the limit on such a bumpy track.

This year we have to show Monaco even more respect than usual – in some areas the car is almost on the rear wheels when the front wheels come off the track. At night we have to work hard to make piloting easier.

Ferrari has the advantage, in Imola we saw how easily they attack the curbs – this works here too. We have to take it easy and see what we can do tomorrow to at least be the best of the rest, after Ferrari and Red Bull.”

Lewis Hamilton (12th): “Today the problems were already just going for a lap – and this is a very different experience than in previous years in Monaco. I remember how we got here with lighter and more tractable cars, and now they’ve gotten a lot heavier, which has changed the feel of driving.

The surface has been updated, but it’s still the bumpiest track I’ve ever ridden. In some areas it seemed as if the beatings would blow their eyes out!

Today the car bounced a lot on the bumps, but it’s not an aerodynamic build like before – the problems are related to the low and stiff suspension we use here.

We made some adjustments at the start of the second workout and tonight we’re going to think about how to find the best balance between maximum efficiency and optimal balance.

I haven’t collected my best sectors in a fast lap yet, but the grip was good. I think we have the potential to be at the top of the middle group. It is unlikely that we can match the speed of Ferrari and Red Bull, but I hope we can beat everyone tomorrow and Sunday.
