Vettel: Driving new cars feels very different

The Aston Martin drivers were in different parts of protocol at the end of Friday practice in Monaco, but both spoke of the difficulties to be overcome by driving a new generation of cars on a narrow city circuit.

Sebastian Vettel (9th): “Although I have raced in Monaco many times, driving the new cars on this track is completely different. The main difference lies in the fact that the tires are now much larger and the track is much less visible as a result.

In addition, these cars are much stiffer and driving through the tunnel is much more difficult than before. I was lucky enough to “catch” the car when I made a mistake near the pool, although of course my heart rate was quickening!

Today we tried some new approaches to institutions, and now we need to make sure they’ve proven effective, and try to figure out how to achieve an even better balance.

The main task for tomorrow is to try and clear the qualifying round, especially in the first session when there will be a lot of cars on the track.”

Lance Walk (18th): “It’s great to be back in Monaco. The track remains the same with all its twists and turns. Today we had a good opportunity to further study the characteristics of the car in its modernized version, which started in Barcelona.

The warm weather made the tires a bit overheated, so during the race on Sunday you will have to try to save the rubber – this will be an important factor. As always, there are some aspects that still need to be worked on, but I am confident that we can move on towards qualifying.”
