The 2023 season will be the most expensive season in history

Sauber sporting director Beat Zehnder believes that due to increasing logistics costs, the 2023 season will be the most expensive season for teams in history…

Beat Zender: “Hotels in the UK are 25% more expensive every year. All hotels in Austin are already booked. We have tried to book ten extra beds, but our hotel no longer has them.

Another problem is that air traffic has not recovered everywhere after the corona pandemic. For example, we are having problems with people returning from Melbourne – even before the date was announced, all flights on the day after the race were fully booked. And if there are empty seats, they have to pay twice as much as before. The calendar for the 2023 season does not seem to be more expensive.

A series of three races in a row always involves risks. We saw it in 2021, when fog in Mexico disrupted an already busy schedule and the high altitude prevented planes from fully loading. But I am even more concerned about a series of three European Grand Prix in a row. We used to drive from Barcelona to Monaco in a week, but Imola is much further. In addition, the installation and dismantling of equipment in Monaco is always associated with chaos.

The most expensive will be the Canadian round, which breaks the European Grand Prix series – we’re paying almost a million pounds for transport alone.
