Many were sure that big rule changes in 2022 would radically change the balance of power, but the top three strongest teams remained the same. McLaren Racing boss Zack Brown told RacingNews365.com that the new rules need time…
Zach Brown: “The races in 2022 turned out to be interesting and although the season went by with the absolute dominance of one driver, it didn’t seem boring. When Michael Schumacher dominated, the races yawned from start to finish, but now the fight was much more interesting than it looks when you look at the protocol.
Unlike in 2021, we only finished on the podium once in 2022, but we closed the gap on Mercedes by taking a step forward, although we were further from pole than in 2021. I think in 2021 we were just lucky with the rules, that they have not changed. The results became closer, representatives of many teams visited the podium.
I am sure Ferrari will take another step forward this year. They have excellent equipment, a modern wind tunnel. Remember that in 2019/2020, after FIA intervention, they had problems with the power plant, but they solved it quickly and this year they will fight for victories. They have strong drivers, a good budget, the necessary technological infrastructure.
We’re on a budget and had a really good lineup of pilots. There were obvious problems with Riccardo, but Lando got the most out of the car. Unfortunately, apart from a simulator, we do not yet have a modern technical infrastructure and the new wind tunnel will only be taken into use this year. While we cannot progress as fast as Ferrari, we hope to make significant progress in the future.
When McLaren equipment is up to modern standards, we intend to get to the top three teams. This is the goal, I see no reason to hinder us. Our racing team is doing very well, we know that part of the speed deficit is due to the lack of the necessary infrastructure, which fortunately is not far off.”
