Speaking of the results of qualifying in Formula 2, we warned that they could be revised – and it happened. Liam Lawson, who set the fastest time, and Ayumu Iwasa, who finished second, were penalized for breaking the yellow flag rule.
At the very end of the first half of qualifying, Felipe Drugovic showed the best time, but he exaggerated it, tried to go through the Antony Nogues corner at too high a speed, but the car started spinning and the Brazilian caught the barrier quite difficult.
He then stopped at the start-finish right in front of the pit wall, which of course caused yellow flags. But Lawson and Iwasa were able to improve on Drugovic’s result just then, with the New Zealander taking pole position and the Japanese DAMS driver second. However, it was immediately announced that the stewards were investigating this episode, so the results of the qualification remained tentative.
But late in the evening, the stewards announced their verdict: Lawson’s time was voided and he was penalized for losing five positions in tomorrow’s sprint. As evidenced by the referee’s decision, Liam practically did not slow down in the sector where yellow flags were hanging due to Drugovic’s stopped car.
Where Iwasa drove a little later, there were already double yellow flags on the track, so he had to interrupt the fast lap, which he didn’t, so he got a heavier fine: he loses ten places at the start of Saturday. race, his fast lap time was also cancelled.
As Ayumu assured, he simply didn’t see the yellow flags, but of course this is not an extenuating circumstance.
After the best laps of the two drivers were abandoned, Drugovic moved to the top of the Group A record and inherited pole position, as he was still faster than Theo Purscher, who set the first time in Group B.
Jack Doohan was also examined but it was found that he slowed significantly on the last two mini-sectors of the circle, so the Australian was cleared of suspicion and will start third on Sunday.
In Lawson’s penultimate time, he would start the weekend’s feature race in 5th, with Iwasa in 13th.
Jake Hughes’ car is on pole for Saturday’s partially reversed start sprint, which also sees Dennis Hauger start from the front row. The penalized Lawson starts 11th.
