Leo Turini on Frederic Vasseur’s priorities

Leo Turini, an Italian motorsport journalist known for his close ties to the Ferrari team, for some reason compared Frederic Vasseur to the sweet-voiced singer Fred Bongusto, who was popular in Italy in the 1960s and 1970s. Perhaps Turini even thought that they were not only namesakes, but also somewhat similar in appearance. At least, arguing about which tasks as the head of the Scuderia Vasser will solve in the first place, the journalist called him that.

Fred “Bongusto” Vasser has already moved closer to me: from the French Riviera he moved to Maranello, where a monument in the form of a prancing stallion is installed in the main square.

I wish him the best of luck in his work, which officially starts on January 9, and I think he should have clearly prioritized himself.

And the circumstances are as follows: the 2023 car has been developed for a long time, this is quite normal, and so the new team leader will receive in full the legacy left by Mattia Binotto, who was nicknamed “Pharaoh” in Maranello.

At the same time, Vasseur can immediately take on the transformation of the team structure and the reorganization of the racing team. He is already negotiating with several people, because he will have to decide who will be responsible for all work processes in the Ferrari pits at the races and which will take up places on the pit wall.

And here you can bet on continuity or implement serious reforms. Whatever choice Vasser makes, it will be an important signal.

Another sensitive issue that needs to be addressed immediately is the issue of equipment upgrades during the season. Figuratively speaking, the floor in the Scuderia’s racing department is now very slippery, to put it mildly.

Ferrari fails to effectively modernize the car, which is repeated from year to year. In addition, the roots of the problem extend into the distant past, as it was born in the days when Binotto was not yet a leader.

There is no doubt that the ground was already shaking under Mattia’s feet when, before the Spa stage, he made pithy statements, which went something like this: “Thanks to the modernization of the power plant, we can claim victories in all the remaining races of the season or even doubles wins”.

Vasser is aware of this whole situation, but only time will tell what ways he will choose to resolve it. However, we will soon find out.
