Nico Hulkenberg will return to Formula 1 in 2023 after a three-year break at Haas. Over the past three seasons, the German driver has not raced regularly, but has made occasional appearances in Formula 1, replacing ailing Racing Point/Aston Martin drivers. British team car development director Tom McCullough praised Nico’s work.
“Nico has a natural talent,” McCullough told Racingnews365. – Last season we threw him into the middle of things in a situation where the team didn’t fully understand the characteristics of the car. In Bahrain, he got behind the wheel during the third training session, without having had all the opportunity to prepare and adjust the seat – he had to get to work immediately.
He is a very talented and gifted racer. You can put him directly behind the wheel in qualifying or in a race and ask him to get the most out of the car – and he’ll handle it whether he’s been driving race cars lately or not. Niko has a lot of experience, which also helps him to go fast right away.
Niko, of course, feels the limits of the car – it doesn’t matter if we are talking about a dry or wet track. Over the years he has discovered the characteristics of Pirelli tyres, which, as I understand, did not suit him very well at the beginning of his career.
