At the end of 2021, Honda formally retired from Formula 1, but in fact continued to provide technical support for the maintenance of power plants to the established Red Bull Powertrains division. The cooperation between the parties will continue until the end of 2025 and in 2026 Honda will allow itself the chance to return to the championship.
Commenting on Racingnews365, Red Bull Racing boss Christian Horner explained that whatever Honda’s decision, the team will continue to develop its own power plant: “Honda has committed to working with us until the end of 2025, which is great. We studied options for 2026 and beyond and came to the conclusion that we needed to build a car and an engine under one roof.
We have invested in Red Bull Powertrains and hired specialists. Our decision to become an independent powertrain manufacturer will not be affected by Honda’s return to the sport in 2026.
We chose our path and invested – in the long run this is absolutely the right decision, as we are responsible for ourselves.
In this scenario, we are not dependent on anyone – the manufacturer can leave or stay, and we will be able to integrate the power plant into the chassis most effectively, as all the engineers are on the same campus.
