Last week it was announced that Andretti and Cadillac had submitted a joint application to participate in Formula 1. The application caused a rather cautious reaction in Formula 1, to the surprise of FIA president Mohammed bin Sulayem, who released a statement in which he said behind the Andretti Cadillac project.
As The Race has discovered, the Formula 1 teams showed a rare unity and resisted Michael Andretti’s project with almost full force. Only one team is ready to support the application – we are talking about Alpine. It is believed that the French automaker is ready to supply the US team with its power plants, which will carry the Cadillac brand.
Reportedly due to the intention to rename Renault’s power plants to Cadillac, the rest of the teams opposed the project. They believe that General Motors will use Formula 1 to promote its road cars and invest less in the championship than other car manufacturers.
British pundit Joe Savard believes that the real reason for the reluctance of other teams to see new rivals in Formula 1 is the loss of some of the prize money, which will have to be shared among a larger number of participants.
