Last year, Red Bull Racing was fined $7 million for violating financial rules and spending 10% of the team’s time in the wind tunnel.
Since winning the Constructors’ Championship, Red Bull Racing has had less time in the wind tunnel than their rivals – as a result, the team will only spend 63% of its base test volume in it, compared to Ferrari’s 75%.
McLaren technical director James Key believes this will have little effect on the strongest team…
James Key: “I think everyone will have to choose their priorities more carefully. Every year the rules increasingly limited the time in the wind tunnel, the teams adapted, relying on their own experience, trying to achieve the maximum effect under these restrictions.
Losing time in a wind tunnel negatively impacts any team, but in real life you don’t spend time on research that you did last year. You just try to close your weaknesses, you are much more accurate in choosing a program, so you should not expect radical consequences.
