Ecclestone denied being arrested in Brazil

Former Formula 1 General Promoter Bernie Eclestone denied reports that he was detained by Brazilian law enforcement at the airport before flying to Switzerland.

On Thursday, it was reported that Ecclestone had been arrested at Campinas airport over a firearm found in luggage after a search. The 91-year-old Briton paid bail of 6,060 Brazilian reais ($1,260) and traveled safely to his destination.

“I have not been arrested. They wanted the money in local currency, which we never got. There was another drama when we tried to find the money. I left the country, I did not have the currency of this state, – Reuters quotes Ecclestone.

He also said he bought the gun many years ago and never used it for its intended purpose.

“I was told he could help if someone tried to rob us. So I bought it from a guy. The weapon was at my house, and I fiddled with it, if people came to visit me, we had fun. He never had ammo, so I didn’t bother to register him. I didn’t know it had to be done,” Ecclestone said.

Commenting on the situation, Ecclestone called it a “dumb little incident”, joking that it hadn’t caught the public eye lately, so he thought he “had to do something about it. let it happen”.
