Hakkinen: Ricciardo was in a difficult situation

After two unsuccessful seasons, Daniel Ricciardo was out of contract with McLaren, became Red Bull Racing’s third driver, but hopes to return to the wheel of the lead car in 2023. Two-time world champion Mika Hakkinen, who also once went on holiday, thinks it will be difficult for the Australian to become chief pilot again.

Mika Hakkinen: “I left Formula 1 in 2001, but I was already a two-time world champion and had the opportunity to take a “sabbatical”. Daniel left Formula 1 due to the fact that he was fired.

If you miss the season and want to come back, how can you prove that you are going to perform better, that you are faster than before? A new generation of racers is coming to Formula 1. How can you prove you are faster than them?

I’m sorry my prediction sounds so negative, but it’s the reality. Daniel was in a very difficult situation. Everyone in the paddock likes him, Ricciardo is a positive guy with a good sense of humour, the fans like him, but you have to admit that teams like McLaren need winners.
