Mercedes boss Toto Wolff said he has no doubt that James Vowles is fully focused on getting better results with Williams when he takes over as team leader in February.
Toto Wolff: “In Formula 1 it’s every man for himself. Each of the leaders defends his point of view, makes every effort to achieve the best for his team. And if I ask James to make Williams a kids’ team for us, he’ll send me to hell.
That Williams, through the use of our power plants, is a “dependent” team on Mercedes has been discussed for several years, but has never been true. We never got involved in solving problems with the team or the pilots.
We’ve always respected the team’s leadership, its authority, and now James will do whatever it takes to bring Williams forward. He will be judged on the team’s performance. If he understands that help is needed from Mercedes, he will say so, but if another position is favorable for Williams, he will support it.
