Williams’ announcement of James Vowles’ appointment as team principal included a quote from Mercedes boss Toto Wolff, which many saw as signs of future cooperation between the teams – and Williams’ reliance on Mercedes. But in an interview after the appointment, the Briton denied these rumours.
James Vowles: “Williams is a completely independent team, our success depends on the results of our work, not on Mercedes. This doesn’t mean we won’t work together in different areas – we did before, but now I’m fully charged to achieve more with my new team.
When you put on your new team’s uniform, you completely switch to work with it, because your overall success depends on it. Williams will not become a subsidiary of Mercedes, we are our own bosses and we have to make it our own.”
