In Monaco, both Alpine riders reached the qualifying final for the third time this season, with Fernando Alonso in seventh and Esteban Ocon in tenth. Both drivers want to score points in the race and overtake Alfa Romeo for fifth place in the constructors’ championship.
Fernando Alonso (7th): “Despite the fact that we made a lot of progress today in working with the car, the result in qualifying could have been better. In the first attempt in the final I showed the fifth fastest time, and given the change in the track condition, I think I can hold this position. Unfortunately I blocked the wheels when braking in the Mirabeau corner.
In Monaco, even a moment of loss of concentration can have a big impact, so my apologies to the team. Anyway, wait and see what the weather will be like tomorrow. If it rains, the race can turn into chaos with lots of red flags and safety car rides.
I’m sure the rain race will appeal to TV viewers, but for those in the car it will be very intense!”
Esteban Ocon (10th): “After three tough practice sessions in which I lacked speed, I am happy to have made it to the final of qualifying in Monaco. We knew that qualifications would be essential, so yesterday and today we focused on finding settings after testing different solutions.
I have mixed feelings – I had a great last lap, but then there was an incident and the session ended. In any case, we showed that the car has the pace and we were able to take it out where necessary – great teamwork.
Tomorrow both cars will start in the top ten and we are preparing for the rain – it will be interesting. Anything can happen in Formula 1.”
Otmar Safnauer, Team Principal: “We are delighted to have qualified for the final with two cars and made progress compared to Friday’s practice and Saturday’s qualifying. We had the potential to take higher places than seventh and tenth at the start, but we failed to put together circles in the final and were completely stopped by red flags at the end of the session. Sometimes this happens, but we will draw conclusions to maximize the potential in the coming races.
Fernando made a small mistake that damaged the car. They are quite small when you consider how serious accidents can be in Monaco. We fix the car for tomorrow’s race.
The forecast does not provide an exact forecast for tomorrow. However, we are in a good position to get a lot of points with two cars in the rain or on a dry track.”
