Former Ferrari driver Jean Alesi made a prediction for the new season. He believes the Scuderia’s main rivals in 2023 will be Red Bull Racing and Mercedes, and that the experience and skills of Milton Keynes team technical director Adrian Newey will be decisive in the title fight.
Jean Alesi: “If you objectively evaluate the joining of forces, then Adrian Newey is the decisive factor. Since F1 changed the regulations and gave engineers more freedom, Newey has changed the situation.
He was a deciding factor last year as no one else helped his team modernize the car during the season. These were small improvements, but they were enough to gain an advantage. That’s why I don’t think we are waiting for the Max Verstappen versus Charles Leclerc confrontation in the new season – we are waiting for the Newey versus Ferrari confrontation.
If he comes up with another masterpiece, everyone will have a hard time. On the other hand, if the Red Bull car turns out to be unreliable, then that matters a lot. Either way, for better or worse, the Newey Factor is fundamental to winning or losing.
I think Ferrari will have two rivals. Firstly, Red Bull is the absolute leader in Formula 1. Secondly, Mercedes. When the team got stronger last year, George Russell won in Brazil. I don’t think they will make a mistake in the design of the car for the second time in a row.”
