Williams recently announced the appointment of James Vowles as team leader. Formula 1 technical director Pat Symonds has highlighted an area that Vowles believes should be a priority.
“First of all he has to pay attention to the strategy,” Pat Symonds shared his opinion at the international business forum in Birmingham. “When I talk about strategy, I don’t mean race strategy. Everyone already knows how good James is in this area. He must assess the state of affairs in the team and understand what to do next.
When I joined Williams in 2013, that’s exactly what I did. I changed the situation by creating a team that finished the season in third place from a team that finished in ninth place. I think James can repeat this, because he’s a very smart kid.
This will of course take time. I was lucky then because I had a solid base to work from – all that was left was to set everything up properly. Therefore, the results came earlier than I expected.
It usually takes three years to rebuild a team – only after this period do you see the results of the work.
