Mercedes drivers George Russell and Lewis Hamilton noted that their sixth and eighth times in the qualifying final of the Monaco Grand Prix reflect the car’s capabilities at the moment. According to the seven-time world champion, he had to take too many risks not to lose even more from his rivals.
George Russell (6th): “All weekend we were limited by the capabilities of the machine, and while sixth place is no cause for celebration, I believe I made the most of the equipment at our disposal. The team has worked hard to find the optimal settings. In Barcelona our strongest point was speed on the straights and in fast corners, but we don’t have that in Monaco!
If we evaluate our form objectively, we couldn’t count on more today. As for the race, I’m hoping for rain. Nobody knows how the tires will perform on wet roads, but it’s important to stay away from the walls and come up with a strategy.”
Lewis Hamilton (8th): “Because of the red flags I couldn’t finish the last fast lap, but I don’t think the result would have been drastically different. I should have done better on the first fast lap, but I couldn’t because I started the attempt with the wrong engine setup. But in Monaco it happens – another bad session.
The car drives quite badly and I had to take a lot of risks to close the gap with the rivals up front. Compared to Friday the car has improved, but even with a perfect circle I would have lost six tenths to the leader, which is quite a lot.
Let’s see what the weather is like tomorrow and try to regain a few positions.”
Toto Wolff, Team Principal: “Typical chaotic Monaco qualifying. In the end George managed to make his circle and Lewis was prevented by red flags. Maybe they cost him a position.
George’s result reflects the pace of the car this weekend – Monaco has never been easy for us, and this statement holds true for this year as well. In practice, our race pace looked better than qualifying, but we know it’s difficult to make predictions in Monaco.
Apparently the weather will help determine the course of the race on Sunday. Let’s see if we can take advantage of all the opportunities that may arise.”
