In Monaco, Daniel Ricciardo lost to team-mate Lando Norris in qualifying for the sixth time this season. If Lando qualified in a high fifth place then Daniel could not make it to the final and only showed the fourteenth fastest time.
Daniel Riccardo (14th): “In the third practice it was my job to get back into the rhythm and pick up speed. Then we adjusted the settings for qualifying – I think I had a good pace in the first session.
I managed to take a few steps forward, but there were also mistakes. Taking all this into consideration, we looked quite competitive. In the second session I couldn’t add as much as I could due to the changed track conditions and other factors. It was very difficult for me to judge the limits of what is possible and how hard you can attack.
It’s hard for me to find words to evaluate the result. I am frustrated and confused because I have not been able to take the steps forward that I should of course have taken.”
Lando Norris (5th): “I am very happy with my result, although it was not easy for us. We are not that slow, but on the other hand unfortunately not fast enough to fight the Ferrari and Red Bull drivers.
But I know my lap wasn’t perfect, although I tried to pass it as best I could, and the car has been running really well since the start of the weekend. I’m quite comfortable behind the wheel and I steer confident enough to get a good lap when it really matters.
But we were a bit short of speed to compete with the two top teams, so the 5th result suits me just fine.
Tomorrow we can only compete for the podium if one of those starting before us has an accident, although of course you shouldn’t count on someone getting in trouble. The main task is to earn more points.
We understand that for the Monaco race it will be difficult to make predictions, and we also know that slow corners are our weakness. But strangely enough, everything changes a bit when we start working on this track, because here you have to set up the car in a completely different way. Therefore, not everything goes as we expected – the scenario is rather the opposite.
That is why we accept today’s fifth result, and tomorrow we have a long race, at the distance from which anything can happen to us – however, as with the rest.
