Alan McNish, Audi’s race program coordinator, said the German company, which plans to enter Formula 1 in 2026, has nothing to do with Andreas Seidl’s move to Sauber.
Seidl has been head of the McLaren team since January 2019, but it was announced late last year that he would lead the Sauber Group when Frederic Vasseur moved from Switzerland’s Hinvil to Maranello, replacing Mattia Binotto, whose services Ferrari decided to decline.
“Obviously something had to change at Sauber, because Vasseur moved from Alfa Romeo to Ferrari, and for him this is a very big change,” said McNish. – In addition, Frederik was involved in the careers of many riders in the years that he led his ART team. Now he has been replaced in Hinvil by Andreas, but that is up to Sauber and Alfa Romeo. This has nothing to do with Audi and our program now.
We are working on the future engine and creating a company that will specialize in developing power plants, building the necessary infrastructure and preparing the necessary technological base. The role of the electric part in the new generation power plant will increase significantly, in addition, a transition to biofuel will take place, all of which will become key factors in the development of this area.
I must say that the most interesting time has come. The decision to enter Formula 1 was an important moment for Audi.”
Sauber Motorsport will continue its partnership with Alfa Romeo in 2023, but this will be the Italian carmaker’s last season as the team’s title sponsor, before Audi becomes the new strategic partner, which was announced last autumn.
