Fernando Alonso is preparing for his 20th season in Formula 1, which he will spend at Aston Martin, where he moved from Alpine, believing in the prospects of this project. Until now, the speed of the cars created by the Silverstone team has been only average, just look at the results of Sebastian Vettel, who finished his last season in the World Championship in 12th place in the individual standings. Last year he managed to score points in just ten races.
Of course, Aston Martin hopes that the lessons of the first season, when Formula 1 switched to cars of a new generation, will be well learned, this experience will be taken into account and embodied in the AMR23 chassis. The extent to which this has been achieved, however, will only become clear when the capabilities of the new car are tested on the track.
Pat Symonds, technical director of Formula 1, is one of those people who knows very well what Fernando Alonso is capable of, because they once worked together for a long time in the Renault works team. Symonds believes the two-time world champion is still capable of fighting for wins, although the last time he climbed to the top step of the podium was way back in 2013 when he drove for Ferrari.
“I think he is still capable of winning if the team gives him a good car,” Symonds told Spanish newspaper Marca. Age is not such a critical factor. Driving modern Formula 1 cars does not require much physical effort, as they are equipped with power steering. But riders need good stamina, it’s important to withstand the effects of g-forces, but it’s quite manageable if you train regularly.
In addition, I believe that Fernando, as always, is distinguished by excellent psychological preparation and racing ingenuity. Can it be said that he is as fast as he used to be? I don’t know, but I think behind the wheel of a good car he is very capable of winning races.
Fernando is a great professional, a true master, and let’s not forget that although he won “only” two titles, he became vice world champion more than once. In all seasons that he finished second in the individual standings, he had a good chance of winning the championship. That is why he could have already had five titles, but he did not succeed, partly because fate has determined it that way.
