The updated FIA International Sporting Code prohibits riders from publicly expressing their political views and making relevant statements in the context of the competition without prior authorization from the federation.
Mercedes team leader Toto Wolff considers the fear unjustified that drivers are in principle prohibited from expressing their opinion.
Toto Wolff: “First we have to see how this rule will work in practice. We agree that sport is not a place for political controversy – on the contrary, sport should unite.
I have no doubt that Mohammed bin Sulayem and the FIA only meant that we should act correctly, and the riders, who have been more outspoken in the past, just need to agree on their position.
I know that every time Mohammed talks to Lewis or vice versa, the conversation ends on a positive note. Therefore, I have no doubt that the application of this rule in practice will not be as strict as it now seems to us, based on what has been written.
