Mark Reuss: Before Andretti, GM had no plans to enter F1

General Motors president Mark Reuss admitted that America’s largest car company had no plans to enter Formula 1 until Michael Andretti approached his management with such an idea.

“I am prepared to assume that General Motors would have made such a decision at some point, and in the years of my career the company could have had a desire to get into Formula 1,” RacingNews365 quoted Reuss as saying. – It was difficult to do this before for several reasons.

I don’t know, maybe it was because of the previous management, high costs, the economic situation of the company – for a long time the reasons could be very different.

But I must emphasize that we think this opportunity in relation to Michael Andretti is very important. I wouldn’t say we were actively looking for such an opportunity, but when Michael approached us, I personally was just in seventh heaven. It’s great that it all worked out.”

Several divisions of GM already have their own racing programs, Cadillac sports prototypes in particular regularly compete in endurance races, and from 2023 it will be not only the US IMSA series, but also the WEC, and Chevrolet is one of two (along with Honda) supplies engines for IndyCar teams. Many NASCAR drivers also drive Chevrolets.

And one of the most important pieces of news from January was a joint statement from General Motors and Andretti Autosport devoted to plans to create a new factory Formula 1 team.
