Mercedes boss Toto Wolff is cautious about the team’s chances in 2023. According to the Austrian, it is not easy to make up for the gap Mercedes had last year and the first conclusions about the team’s prospects for the new season can only be drawn after the winter testing in Bahrain.
Toto Wolff: “We know very well how far behind we are and in which areas we are behind. The team is working hard on a machine that can solve these problems. However, only in testing will we understand whether we were able to unleash the potential that we felt was in last year’s car.
We have no doubt that if you lose half a second it is incredibly difficult to catch up with Red Bull or Ferrari like that. However, the team is determined to do it, but still we have to set ourselves achievable goals.
If we reach the level we hope for, then we can fight in the vanguard – this will be the starting point. However, we do not believe we are guaranteed anything. It is possible that we have the same deficit as at the end of last season.
