Alonso: Last stint had to save tires

Fernando Alonso finished seventh in Monaco, showing his best result of the season. His teammate Esteban Ocon finished ninth, but a penalty for a collision with Lewis Hamilton dropped him to twelfth place in protocol. The points Alonso earned helped Alpine close the gap with Alfa Romeo to one point in the battle for fifth place in the Constructors’ Championship.

Fernando Alonso (7th): “A very difficult race due to the weather conditions, so we can be happy with seventh place and the points earned. It was difficult to make strategic decisions, but we did everything right – great teamwork.

The riding was not easy – I had to be careful not to make a mistake and reach the finish. On a dry track, especially after the second red flag, we had to work very carefully with the rubber, based on the information we got during Friday’s practice. I rode quietly in seventh, so I’m happy with the work done.

Esteban Ocon (12th): “It’s hard to accept today’s result – I’m disappointed to leave Monaco with no points earned. Behind the wheel, it seemed to me that the collision with Lewis was a racing incident – in Monaco, any attempt to overtake can lead to a collision.

The team has worked hard this weekend, especially after Friday’s practice, to find a chance to improve on Saturday, but I have to leave without points. We have to move on – I expect to do everything right in the next race in Baku.

Laurent Rossic, Executive Director: “Today’s race in Monaco proved to be event-rich – it’s always good when a team earns points in such races. We expected a difficult weekend, given the large number of slow corners that do not suit our car.

I had to work hard all weekend to add Saturday – this has not only helped us here, but will come in handy in the future. We use the knowledge gained to adapt our car to any type of track.

Both riders had a good race and finished seventh and ninth, a well deserved result. However, Esteban was fined – in our opinion, the collision error 50/50, so we won’t worry too much about what happened and start preparing for the next race.

I thank everyone in the team for the hard work during two weekends in Spain and Monaco. This week we will have some rest and then we will prepare for the stages in Azerbaijan and Canada where we will try to earn points with two cars.”
