In 2022, the Williams team again fell to last place in the Constructors’ Championship, despite being eighth the previous year. Last season, the riders only earned 8 points, and such unconvincing results, as well as difficulties in attracting new sponsors, led to rumors that Dorilton Capital, owner of Williams, is going to sell the team.
However, recent measures by American investors suggest otherwise. It appears that Dorilton has invested a further £36 million in the Grove team.
According to the British press, on December 22, Williams received this money for a stake in the team, and while there is no exact information on who got it, there is reason to believe that it was the Dorilton Capital fund that increased its stake .
Together with recent personnel decisions, this move suggests that investors are much more involved in the team’s affairs: James Vowles, former Mercedes chief strategist, will take over as Williams chairman on February 20. He replaced Jost Capito, under which the team was able to improve, but apparently last year’s results disappointed investors and decisive action was taken.
Additional cash injections will to some extent help the team stabilize its position, which deteriorated following the departure of a number of sponsors, including Canadian company Sofina and associated brands, who provided very generous support to Nicholas Latifi during his three seasons at Williams.
But in 2023, the Canadian was replaced by the American debutant Logan Sargent, who becomes the new partner of Alex Albon. Time will tell what results he can achieve in Formula 1, but in any case he still has to adapt to the team, and to the new technology for him, and to the atmosphere of the World Cup paddock.
Williams’ 2022 financial statements will be published later and then the team’s economic situation will become clearer.
